The man died with little fanfare, especially in contrast to the royal funeral of the singing trainwreck that was Whitney. Jimmy Castor was so important to me when I first got into DJing. I had his album “It’s Just Begun”. The whole thing fascinated me. It was the first soul/funk album I had owned that had a wide variety of sounds on it. Each song felt unique and different from the ones around it, while also feeling that they all fit together like pieces of a puzzle.
Later when YouTube brought me images of Jimmy Castor, I was amazed with the range of skills the man had. Watching him in concert is amazing. I can’t even whistle so someone who is a multi-instrumentalist is truly awesome to me. Watch him hog the solos like an NBA prima donna below
His music was so full of life and sometimes humor. He wrote songs about Vampires, Troglodytes, and my personal favorite King Kong. I’m not sure why, but there was I time that I was absolutely obsessed with this song. Even today it makes me smile, which is maybe the greatest legacy an artist can leave behind; dancing, and smiling.
