Bergman Project: The Magician

This project is taking me much longer than I expected. I enjoy these movies, but I feel like I never have time to see them. The only time I am watching movies these days is on the weekends and  it’s hard to make your weekend viewing a dark Scandinavian psycho-drama.

That being said I really enjoyed The Magician. It was really layered yet accessible. I felt it was one of the most populated of Bergman’s films. Every character (of which there are many) was unique and fully formed. The balance the film displayed is masterful. It was a perfect blend of the societal vs. the individual, pathos vs. comedy, magic vs. realism, etc. There are numerous ways to view this film, but Bergman never seems to wink at the audience in regards to any of them. I believe that is the true accomplishment of his work, and it is in full display in The Magician.
